Starting your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) journey is an exciting step towards self-improvement and physical fitness.
At Team Passos, we ensure your Jiu-Jitsu experience is welcoming, educational, and engaging right out of the gate.
Here's what you can expect as you join our community.
Warm Welcome
Upon your arrival at Team Passos, our team will greet you and give you a tour of the facility. You'll be fitted for a properly sized training uniform and meet both your instructor and fellow classmates before starting class.
Introduction to BJJ
Before stepping on the mats, we'll give you a quick rundown of what you can expect during class. We'll also provide you with tips to maximize your first-time training experience. During this time, you can also ask any questions related to the class or Jiu-Jitsu in general.
Warm-Up
Your class will start with a series of warm-up exercises such as jogging and basic BJJ movements like shrimping and bridging. We cater the warm-up exercises based on the techniques and movements we'll be practicing that week, so every week will look a little different.
The warm-up is designed to prepare your body for the rest of class while improving your endurance, flexibility, and agility.
Technique Instruction
Once we're warmed up and ready, it's time to tackle the technique.
At Team Passos, we have a structured curriculum for teaching beginner students the basics of Jiu-Jitsu. In our Fundamentals Program, we utilize a concept-based teaching methodology to equip new BJJ students with the essential tools to kickstart their Jiu-Jitsu knowledge.
The techniques and concepts taught cover important positions and practical self-defense skills. Our instructors will demonstrate and explain each technique and concept, ensuring you understand the mechanics and purpose behind each movement.
Partner Drills
After the group instruction, you will be paired with another student to practice the techniques. This hands-on practice is a critical component to learning BJJ. Our instructors will circulate to offer personalized feedback and ensure everyone practices safely and intentionally.
Rolling
In the next section of class, you'll have the opportunity to engage in "rolling," which is the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu term for sparring.
During rolling, students apply techniques in real time against a resisting partner. This practice is closely monitored to ensure safety and is an excellent way to start understanding the dynamic nature of BJJ. It's also a fun way to immediately test what you've learned that day, in a practical context.
Finishing Up
To wrap up the class, the students will line up while the instructor shares what they saw during the rolling to provide additional insight for the following class.
Afterward, you'll have time to socialize with other students and reflect on the class together. At Team Passos, Jiu-Jitsu is all about building strong connections with your training partners and creating a supportive network that encourages continual growth.
