One common question we receive from new students is: “How often should I train?”
While enthusiasm to train as often as possible is admired, finding the right balance is essential for long-term success and health, both on and off the mats.
The Risks of Overtraining
Jiu-Jitsu is a fun and exciting physical activity. Many new students want to hit the ground running and start training every day. While this enthusiasm is commendable and contagious, we advise new students to create a more manageable schedule to start with.
Training five to six times a week can lead to increased risks of injuries and a quicker onset of burnout, especially for those who aren’t yet physically conditioned for such demanding activity.
New students often underestimate the physical and mental toll that intense, frequent training can impose. Jiu-Jitsu is not only physically demanding but also mentally challenging. Overloading on training sessions will lead to diminished returns, where fatigue will negatively impact your ability to absorb techniques and apply them effectively.
Gradually Increasing Training Intensity
For new students who feel ready and are eager to train more frequently, we recommend a gradual increase. Start with training 2-3 times per week, and as you build stamina and strength, and your body adjusts to the new demands of BJJ, consider adding another session.
Pay attention to how your body responds. If you’re recovering well and continue to feel strong and motivated, this is a sign that you’re ready to handle more.
It’s important to always keep in touch with your instructors about your training frequency. Their experience and insight will help guide you in making the best decisions for your training schedule based on your physical condition, skill level, and personal goals.
Listening to Your Body
At the end of the day, the best guide is your own body. Rest when you feel overly fatigued, and seek professional advice if you experience pain or discomfort. Remember, BJJ is a marathon, not a sprint. The goal Is to enjoy the journey, continually learn and improve, and remain healthy enough to train consistently. Consistency is key to Jiu-Jitsu and sustaining a healthy lifestyle.
